213 Newark Avenue Named "The Saffron"

The Field's Development project on Newark Avenue just west of Jersey Avenue is set to auction several units, according to the NY Times. The 76 unit low rise building, to be named The Saffron, will auction between 9 and 15 units to jump start traditional sales.

The Saffron sits on what had been an empty lot for several years. With several spaces for retail shops, the new construction could provide a big boon for the stretch of Newark Avenue. While the whole of Newark Avenue has been slower to enjoy the benefits of gentrification, most new restaurants and shops have been opened east of Jersey Avenue. The once empty lot where The Saffron now stands was a formidable obstacle to the western section's redevelopment.

Recently, however, the mysterious Port-O Lounge began operating on weekends across the street from the new building. Once occupied, the Saffron may do well extending what is considered by many as the western border of the Newark Avenue retail strip.

The six story residential and retail building on Newark Avenue is beginning to get windows and brick work. The project will hopefully help energize Newark Avenue retail, especially on the western end.

215 Newark Avenue

215 Newark Avenue in downtown Jersey City

Half of the eventual six stories have been erected on the Newark Avenue property. For years this empty lot more or less marked the end of the gentrified downtown. When completed, the base of the new building will include retail stores with apartment units above it and serve as a gateway extending gentrification west of Jersey Avenue.

213 Newark Avenue Pops Above Ground

213 Newark Avenue, Jersey City

213 Newark Avenue, a Field's Development Project, has popped up above the ground level. The six story building fills in a major vacant lot on Newark Avenue, and will include retail as well as apartments.

For years, the property sat vacant with a for sale sign. The original five story plan was amended after Field's bought the property.

Last year, union representatives picketed the site.
