OX Officially Toast
OX, which had been closed the past week for "vacation" is officially closing. A note left posted outside thanking patrons and staff announced the closing and a for sale sign sums things up. OX was one of Jersey City's finest eateries.

Oh no! Ox was a great restaurant, this is terrible news.
I hate to say it, but I think JC can't appreciate the food they were doing. What a I shame, I loved that place.
I think you are probably right; reading comments made on the local message boards about what restaurants people with lesser palates thought were good or better than Ox leads me to think many people around here would be satisfied chewing on raw cow hide. But hey, at least we have a Chilis and Pizzeria Uno to satisfy them.
I agree that the food was excellent, though portions were smallish. I sometimes walked away hungry.
As for why Ox closed, high rent might have hurt them. They opened just at the peak of the real estate market, back when everyone thought Newark Ave. was going to become the new Washington St. in just a couple years.
The lease might have been too high.
They had a great menu, superb service, and were conveniently located.
The only problem I had with Ox was that I think they were overpriced. My wife and I had dinner there last month and were shocked to pay $95 for our meal... it's good food but it's not $95 good...
I'm really sad they're gone and upset that I never got to try out their brunch.
I agree with Noam. my husband and I celebrated our first anniversary there last year. it was nice but was kind of missing That Thing... the Thing that makes it worth the price, I guess...
I'd much rather go to Soul Flavors for a nice dinner. And for just kicking around, Skinner's Loft has my vote.
