PATH Riders Prefer Metro Cards
The Port Authority's SmartCards aren't too popular, according to the Jersey Journal. The discount offered by the cards is simply not enough to entice riders into signing up, and many riders still prefer the universal pay-per-ride Metro Card.
One day in the Utopian future, the SmartCards will be universal on the MTA, NJ Transit, and PATH systems. The Port Authority agreed to sign up for a universal system in 2005, about a year after the MTA began testing the system, though the MTA continues to experiment.

My main beef with the new cards is that I get my pre-tax transit deduction in the form of TransitCheks, and these can't be put on the cards. Until they come up with a way that people can use TransitCheks, they're going to have a limited customer base.
Same problem as Caitlin. Plus, who wants to use more than one card. As it is I have to carry the metrocard, a stack of light rail tix and a couple ferry tix just in case I need to get Manhattan while actually carrying something like luggage for a flight later in the day. The PATH taking metrocards was inspired and a great help to us PATH users, the smart card seems superfluous.
Couldn't agree more. In the future, the ultimate would be an integrated transit card system for riders of the MTA and the PATH. Since the Port Authority Trans Hudson is a joint operation between NY and NJ, this should feasibly be possible. A seamless experience for riders of the PATH and MTA would be ideal.
