Hoboken Traffic Cameras May Violate Laws
NJ.com Blog Hoboken Now is reporting the recently approved traffic light cameras for Hoboken's Washington Street intersections may run afoul of state laws. The red light cameras cost the city $75K and while safety is the concern, Hoboken law makers perhaps should have done some research: after installation of red light cameras in Lubbock, Texas, occurrences of accidents increased. So much for public safety.

Sigh. Read the article. The cameras reduce accidents over the long run not just at the intersections, but by limiting risky drivers in general. I wish they would install these in JC to bust people who punch it to turn left across traffic when the light turns green.
Actually, the article says there isn't really enough data for a three month interval; however, the studies listed here all basically support the idea that red light cameras lead to more rear end collisions as drivers slam on breaks in order to avoid a red light camera ticket.
Why doesn't Hoboken focus on actually installing proper 4 way stoplights and walk/dont walk signals instead of adding traffic cameras? Between the shoddy state of traffic lights and the roads themselves, there are a lot of other things that are more important than making a few bucks off people that are stuck in a red light because the traffic isn't moving.
