5 Shops Will Create "Market" In Newport
With the south tower of Newport's Shore Club already finished and the North tower advancing rapidly, it is only a matter of time before the much hyped River Market opens. Residents hoping for a true shopping district though are likely to be disappointed.
Retail space has always been a part of the Newport development, most notably the Newport Mall. But shopping in a mall is not at all the same thing as browsing boutiques or sipping coffee at an outdoor cafe. Existing storefronts along the streets of Newport don't really offer much in the way of a shopping, providing residents with services like dry cleaning and ATMs. Many hoped the River market would change this, bringing a shopping district more akin to an actual downtown to the Newport neighborhood.
Residents may be dismayed to learn though that only five shops will be opening beneath the Shore Club, in addition to a grocery store and of course, another bank. Three 1200 square foot storefronts are available and two larger ones, according to this marketing brochure (PDF). Retail this may be, but a shopping district it is not.

I disagree. This is still fairly significant retail, especially compared to all the other new development going up in downtown JC and Hoboken. Also, this doesn't include the retail that will going up across the street in the AquaBlue complex.
Yes, but considering the amount of retail along Grove Street-- this is not very much considering the population density of Newport vs. historic Van Vorst Park. The same is true of Newark Avenue, even if much of Newark Avenue's retail has seen better days. I think part of the problem will be that because Newport lacks a central business shopping area other than the mall, there is little to draw non-Newport residents in to shop. Perhaps the skating rink will be enough to lure folks from across Jersey City to the shops. Also, is ANOTHER bank in Newport really necessary?
I agree with anonymous. This flyer only shows what is currently for lease, not the total marketplace area. Think of it as an on-street mall which starts at starbucks and heads north to include babbo's, life spa, health club/runner shop, duane reade, bank, major grocery store, these 5 shops AND whatever is across the street in aqua rental. Then add to that whatever goes in the next two buildings to the north and you actually have quite a bit of retail.
Oops also forgot to mention south city grill and of course kim's - for as long as it's there. Actually may be even better to think of it as a stretch which starts at the newport path station, heads down to town square then turns along river drive, eventually to connect up to hoboken path station with shops along both sides all the way.
